Why Shelfie
How Shelfie compares to spreadsheets, automated discounting apps, and manual management
There are a handful of ways merchants manage dead stock. Here's an honest comparison of each.
The alternatives
Spreadsheets and manual tracking
Most merchants start here. You export products, sort by last-sale date, identify the slow movers, and manually update prices in Shopify.
The problem: It takes hours, you do it infrequently (so dead stock accumulates), and there's no audit trail of what you changed or whether it worked. If you want to undo a round of markdowns, you need the original spreadsheet.
Automated discounting apps
Several apps will automatically discount your products on a schedule — no review required. Set the rule, forget about it.
The problem: Your store changes prices while you're asleep. A product that's temporarily out of stock because of a supplier delay gets marked down. A bestseller that had a slow week gets discounted unnecessarily. New arrivals get swept into the wrong rule. Brand-equity brands find prices changed without context.
These apps optimise for convenience over control. That's the right trade-off for some stores — but if you care about which products get discounted and why, you need to be in the loop.
Shelfie: analysis is automatic, actions are yours
Shelfie automates everything up to the moment of action:
- Syncing your catalog
- Scoring products by aging
- Matching each product to the right rule
- Queueing the right action
Then it stops and shows you the list. You review, select, and click Apply. Nothing changes in Shopify until you do.
This gives you the speed of automation (your dead stock is surfaced without manual work) with the safety of manual control (you see exactly what will change before it does).
What makes Shelfie's rules engine different
Most dead stock apps offer 2–3 rule scopes: maybe "by vendor" or "by collection". Shelfie supports 8 scope types, resolved by priority:
| Scope | Priority | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Product | 100 | Exact override for one product |
| Tag | 80 | Campaign-style targeting across collections |
| Collection | 60 | Category-wide policies |
| Product type | 40 | Broad category treatment |
| Vendor | 20 | Supplier-specific rules |
| Category | 15 | Shopify taxonomy targeting |
| SKU prefix | 10 | Season/family-encoded SKUs |
| Location | 5 | Single-warehouse or pop-up clearance |
What this unlocks in practice:
- Your Nike products have a tag rule: no discounts, ever. They'll never be touched by the catch-all markdown rule.
- Your winter coats (a collection) get flagged at 14 days, not 30, because they're seasonal.
- Your own-brand basics (vendor rule) get aggressively discounted at 45 days.
- Your Auckland warehouse (location rule) gets cleared before you close it.
All of this coexists. The rules resolve automatically — the most specific match wins.
True reversibility
When Shelfie applies an action it stores a complete snapshot of the product's state at that moment:
- Exact price and compareAtPrice for every variant
- Tag list
- Product status (active/draft/archived)
- Collection membership (for "add to collection" actions)
Revert restores all of this exactly. Not a best-effort approximation — the original state, in one click.
If you changed a product's price manually after applying a Shelfie action, Shelfie will restore the price it captured before the action — not your manual change. This is a known edge case; if you manually edit an applied product, revert may not match your latest state. Check Troubleshooting for the workaround.
Transparent revenue tracking
The Recovered KPI is calculated from real orders:
recovered = Σ line_item revenue
for orders placed AFTER actionAppliedAt
It updates on every sync and in real time via the orders/create webhook (Pro plan). Per-product, you can see exactly how much revenue each action generated.
This is not an estimate, not a model, not a prediction. It's actual money your customers paid after you acted on a product.
Reverting an action resets that product's recovered amount to $0 — because you reversed the intervention that generated the attribution.
